Outline A placebo is something that has no real medicine in it. It called "sugar pills" too. Dr. Beecher was worried that an operation of a soldier without morphine. He had been in a battle and was hurt very badly, but Dr. Beecher had no more morphine because it is a very powerful drug. A nurse injected the soldier with a saline solution and she told him that she was giving morphine. However, he relaxed immediately and said he felt very little pain. Doctor's clothes have similar effect to placebo. Wearing a white coat may increase the confidence of even new doctor. Kino and Juana lived in a poor fishing village, and they had a baby boy named Coyotito. One day, Kino was looking for pearls in the sea to pay for Coyotito, who had been bitten by a large scorpion. He found an unprecedentedly large pearl. Fortunately, the future of the Kino family should have been bright. He went to a dealer in town to sell pearls, but he was told that it was too big and worthless, and he took it home again. On that night, someone sneaks into Kino's house for the pearl and stabs him to death at the end of the fight. This story seems to be happy and fortunate story at first glance, but it is not. On the contrary, all the bad things happen just as the pearls brought bad luck. I feel a little sad.
