An Ideal Husband

Outline

London, England in 1895. A young and spirited politician Robert Chiltern was famous for his noble character. His wife, Gertrude, was also active in the areas of higher education for women and women's suffrage, and everyone acknowledged that the couple were models of British public official. Robert loved his innocent and lie-hating wife, and Gertrude respected his perfect husband.

One night, they hold a party. Among them were Robert's sister Mabel and his best friend Sir Arthur Goring. Mabel who is in love with Arthur, continues to approach, but Arthur who enjoys bachelorhood is attracted to Mabel, but has not proposed to her. Meanwhile, uninvited guests came. Laura Cheveley, the face of the upper class in Vienna.

Mrs. Cheveley approached Robert with Argentina's canal plan when he is alone, she asks to agree with that. Robert was an opponent of canal plan, tried to decline the offer. However she threatened to reveal the crimes he had once committed with evidence. Robert had no choice but to accept the request after all.

After the party, Mabel picked up a diamond brooch that had fallen. Arthur was familiar with it, so he took care of it and they left the Chiltern family. That night, Gertrude rushes to the funny Robert and asks what he's talking to Mrs. Cheveley. She was furious when he had changed his opinion of the canal plan. Gertrude has Robert write a letter against the canal plan and deliver it to Mrs. Cheveley.

The next day Robert consulted with Arthur. When he was a secretary to the cabinet, Robert was enthusiastic about Baron Arunheim who was befriending him, and snooped on confidential material about the Cabinet's investment in the Suez Canal. He wrote to Baron Arunheim about the matter and in return he received a reward and entered the parliament. Mrs. Cheveley received the letter from Baron Arunheim.

Robert suffered from losing Gertrude rather than status and honor. She will never forgive Robert's mistakes. Arthur encourages and promises to help his best friend.

Mrs. Cheveley received the letter and visited the Chiltern's house. She told Gertrude that she had lost her brooch last night. Gertrude, unaware of the brooch, insults Mrs. Chevry, and Mrs. Cheveley got angry and reveals Robert's sins. Robert had just arrived in the room, he could not deny her story and kicked out finally.

Gertrude had believed that Robert was a perfect and special person with no falts, strongly rejected him. The confused Gertrude wrote to Arthur that she wanted to go see him. Arthur receives the letter and waits for her arrival, but at the wrong time his father, Count Caversham appears. He came to preach to Arthur, who would never get married. Arthur has no choice but to deal with Count Caversham, he told his servants to keep the upcoming lady in the drawing room.

When Arthur finished his opponent with Count Caversham, Robert comes to visit. Robert is rejected by Gertrude and sinks in despair. At that time, he noticed the noise in the next room. Robert opens the door without hearing Arthur's restraint and sees Mrs. Cheveley in a room. Robert misunderstood that Arthur had betrayed by communicating with Mrs. Cheveley. Arthur was astonished when he noticed the misunderstanding after Robert left. Mrs. Cheveley smiles alertly and offers Arthur a deal. She urged Arthur to marry in exchange for a letter of evidence.

In fact, the two had been engaged before, but the betrayal of Mrs. Cheveley broke the relationship. Arthur laughed in dismay and rejected Mrs. Cheveley, who had defiled the love of Chiltern couple. And skillfully put the brooch given by Mabel last night on her wrist. This was originally a stolen item, not hers. Seeing that, Arthur urged Mrs. Cheveley to hand over the letter if she didn't want to be arrested.

Mrs. Cheveley desperately tries to remove the bracelet, but she doesn't understand how it works. She accepted the conditions and gave a letter of evidence to Arthur. But she stole Arthur's eyes and hid Gertrude's letter in her dress. will send like a love letter to Robert and try to completely break the relationship between Chiltern couple.

The House of Representatives begins discussions on the canal plan, and Robert gives a speech against the plan. Despite being praised by others, Robert left the chamber with a dark look. The next day, Mrs. Cheveley's plot handed over Gertrude's letter to Robert. However, because there was no address, he misunderstood that it was a letter addressed to him and hurried to Gertrude's room. Gertrude has received a letter of evidence from Arthur. Robert burned it and hugged Gertrude.

Count Caversham visited and informs him that the Prime Minister is about to bring Robert into the cabinet. However, Robert thought he was not suitable for committing a crime in the past and told him to decline. Gertrude also agree with him. Upon hearing this from Count Caversham, Arthur hurriedly visited Gertrude and accused him of not admitting Robert's shortcomings. Gertrude changes her mind because he told that it is the role of women to forgive men's sins.

Gertrude stopped imposing his ideals on Robert, and the couple deepened their ties. Mrs. Cheveley returns to Vienna and Arthur proposes to Mabel to marry him.

Impression

Gertrude hated Mrs. Cheveley because she had unreliable personality and dishonest since she was a student. Even if you are not irrelevant to lie person like Gertrude, you would hate her.

Arthur told Gertrude that it is the role of women to forgive men's sins, but this is an impossible statement in the modern world of gender equality.
